Can you carry in South Dakota without a permit?

South Dakota allows permitless concealed carry from age 18 for people who may legally possess a handgun, including eligible visitors.

SDCL 23-7-7: 'South Dakota residents and nonresidents who may lawfully possess a pistol are not required to have a permit in order to carry a concealed pistol in this state.' Persons under 18 may not possess a pistol (SDCL 23-7-44) and may not carry concealed except with a parent or guardian (SDCL 23-7-71).

Is South Dakota an open carry state?

Yes. South Dakota allows open carry of a handgun without a permit from age 18 for people who may legally possess one.

Residents and visitors who may legally possess a pistol can carry openly or concealed without a permit. People under 18 generally may not possess a pistol.
