Can you carry in Missouri without a permit?

Missouri allows permitless concealed carry for people who may legally possess a handgun, including eligible visitors.

Since Jan 1, 2017 (SB 656), RSMo 571.030.1(1) criminalizes concealed carry only in areas restricted under 571.107, so carrying concealed without a permit is legal elsewhere for anyone who may lawfully possess a firearm. The statute sets no explicit minimum age for permitless carry on foot; the vehicle-carry exception is 19+ (18 for military/honorably discharged).

Is Missouri an open carry state?

Yes. Missouri allows open carry of a handgun without a permit for people who may legally possess one.

Open carry needs no permit under state law, but cities and counties may ban it locally; where a local ban applies, you may open carry only with a Missouri permit or a recognized out-of-state permit, and must show it to police on request.

The permit runs five years from the last day of the month it was issued; applicants must generally be 19, or 18 if serving in or honorably discharged from the U.S. military.

Does Missouri issue non-resident permits?

No. Missouri does not issue carry permits to non-residents. No non-resident permits, except members of the US Armed Forces stationed in Missouri and their spouses (RSMo 571.101.2). Minimum age drops to 18 for members of or honorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

Do you have to tell police you are carrying in Missouri?

No proactive duty to inform. Permit holders must carry the permit plus photo ID and display them on a peace officer's request (RSMo 571.121); failure is a civil citation up to $35, not a crime.
