Is a Montana Non-Resident Permit Valid in Maine?

No such permit issuedVerified 2026-08-08

Montana does not sell permits to out-of-state applicants (permit requires at least 6 months' Montana residency, US citizenship or lawful permanent residence, and Montana ID (MCA 45-8-321; MT DOJ). No non-resident permits are issued). For carry in Maine, what matters is a permit you can actually hold — your resident permit, or a non-resident permit from a state that issues them.

Why

Maine recognizes a permit 'issued by another state to its resident' only where that state recognizes Maine's resident permit - non-resident permits are not honored. Extra conditions: permit holders from Alaska, Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota and Virginia must be 21+ (Virginia holders must also carry government-issued photo ID). In practice most visitors 21+ may simply carry permitless.
